For Jordan
I still remember the moment I asked how things were going with his girlfriend, Jordan. Aaron's eyes sparkled and a smile came over his whole face. Want to know a secret? He said somewhat under his breath. I'm going to ask her to marry me. I wish I could describe to you the joy that he exuded as he said this. I gave him a hug and told him how happy I was to hear this great news! In April, they will celebrate 3 years of marriage. Jordan, you were my first "sister." I love you so much and treasure your friendship. Thank you for loving my brother so well.
She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: "You are the God who sees me," for she said, "I have now seen the One who sees me." -Genesis 16:13 NIV
"I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia in high school. This disease causes nerve pain without having a true cause. There have been many times in my life my frustration has gotten the better of me because the pain has kept me from doing the things I wanted to do. But all along God has been there. Through all my tears and frustrations, God sees me. Like Hagar, God sees me and has a plan for me. My job is not to understand his plan but to trust and obey whatever he has for me.
To be seen is to be known. Every fear. Every insecurity. Every flaw. Every worry. Every sinful thought. Every mistake. Every dream. Every hope. God sees all of me and cares deeply for me. So many times we want to make sure we present our best selves- our Sunday morning selves. God sees through our façade and longs to be known by us."
- Jordan Fowler
I could not have said it any better. Jordan's story about what this verse means to her speaks to parts of my heart that need to be reminded that God sees us, knows us, and wants us.
"El Roi" is the original language Hagar used to name God
"the God who sees me."
What do you need to know that He sees?
What emotion(s) does this aspect of God's character stir up in you?
I encourage you to ask the Holy Spirit to search your heart. Then be honest with Him in prayer about whatever comes to the surface.
Even if you are already familiar with the story of Hagar, I encourage you to take a few minutes to read it. It is a short but powerful story of God meeting an Egyptian slave in the pages of the Old Testament.
If God can meet Hagar on her darkest day, do you think He could do the same for you?
Emily , you are a BLESSING.
