OCTOBER '24
Oh friends- this is such a timely word for me, and I hope it is for you too. I have tried over and over again to put words to what this scripture means to me. I think my journey with this verse is still too raw and I’m still in the thick of clinging to these words on a very regular basis. So instead of sharing my perspective, I’d like to share God’s perspective. His is much more worthy and comforting than anything I could say anyway…
Deuteronomy 3:22
Do not be afraid of them; the Lord your God himself will fight for you.
Deuteronomy 31:6
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.
Joshua 1:9
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not
be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you
wherever you go.
Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear
no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
Psalm 27:1
The Lord is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?
Psalm 34:4
I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.
Psalm 46:1-3
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.
Psalm 56:3-4
When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise—in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?
Psalm 118:6
The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid.
What can mere mortals do to me?
Proverbs 29:25
The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe.
Lamentations 3:57
You came near when I called you, and you said, “Do not
fear.”
Haggai 2:5
‘This is what I covenanted with you when you came out
of Egypt. And my Spirit remains among you. Do not fear.’
Luke 12:7
Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all
numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
Luke 12:32
(Jesus says), “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.”
John 14:27
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
2 Timothy 1:7
For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”
1 John 4:18
There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.
Pick one of these (or do your own search) and write it on an index card. Carry it with you. Spend this month committing that verse to memory.
In the midst of my current fears, I am attending a Bible
study on the book of Revelation. I would
not have guessed that God would use Revelation to comfort me, but He is! Before starting this study, Revelation felt
like just a lot of word pictures that didn’t really make sense. But God is using this study to speak to me about
the comfort of His never-ending presence and the truth that all wrongs will be made
right.
“…Do not weep. Look, the Lion from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered…” -Revelation 5:5
Thank you, Emily. This is timely for me too, especially with all the unknowns of today: my health, what is going on in my family, politics, the loss of life and property due to the hurricane, and my list goes on. Thank you for pointing me to God. He can handle my fears and comfort me.
